Orihime uses her powers to protect Uryuu and herself from the explosions, and Mayuri expresses his wish to experiment on Orihime. Uryuu begins to fight Mayuri, but is quickly disabled by the paralyzing abilities of Mayuri's zanpakutou when his lieutenant, Nemu Kurotsuchi, uses her body to hold down Uryuu. Mayuri then reveals that he has experimented on many other Quincy, including Uryuu's grandfather, Souken Ishida, and was responsible for his death.
