Full Plot Summary

spoilers

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is set in the nation of Amestris, governed by the military. Brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric attempt forbidden human transmutation to revive their dead mother Trisha. The experiment fails catastrophically: Al's body is entirely lost and Ed loses his left leg. In desperation, Ed sacrifices his right arm to bind Al's soul to a suit of armor. They receive automail prosthetics from Winry and Pinako and burn their house in resolve. The brothers travel to the capital and become State Alchemists, with Ed nicknamed the Fullmetal Alchemist. Under Colonel Roy Mustang's direction, they search for the Philosopher's Stone, which can bypass equivalent exchange. They uncover that the stones are made from human lives and that the Homunculi are products of Father's experiments. Father, a being who rejects God, plans to create a nationwide transmutation circle to absorb the power of Amestris' human population at the alkahest. The series culminates in a battle at Central City where Father is denied his goal, the Dwarf in the Flask is killed, and King Bradley is revealed as Wrath. Ed uses his Gate of Truth to give up his ability to use alchemy in exchange for Al's body back. The brothers return to Resembool, with Ed visiting Winry as the series ends.
