Naruto Shippuden picks up two and a half years later with Naruto returning from his training with Jiraiya. The Akatsuki organization is now actively hunting the Tailed Beasts, and Naruto's Nine-Tails power becomes a central plot point. The story builds to the Fourth Great Ninja War, where all five great nations unite against Akatsuki's undead army, culminating in the sealing of the Ten-Tails and the arrival of the Otsutsuki clan.
Naruto Shippuden opens with Naruto returning from his three-year training with Jiraiya, now more powerful and able to summon giant toads. He rejoins Team Kakashi and battles Akatsuki members, including Itachi (whose truth Naruto learns) and Pain, who destroys Konoha. Naruto defeats Pain through his own words and earns the village's respect. Meanwhile, Sasuke defeats Itachi and learns the truth about the Uchiha massacre, joining Akatsuki in a plan to destroy Konoha. The Fourth Great Ninja War erupts when Kabuto reanimates thousands of dead ninjas, including all previous Hokage and Madara Uchiha. Naruto and Killer Bee gain control of the Nine-Tails and Eight-Tails respectively. The war ends with the arrival of Kaguya Otsutsuki, an ancient being from another dimension. After her defeat and sealing, Naruto finally reconciles with Sasuke in an epic final battle, and both lose an arm in their confrontation. Sasuke's crimes are forgiven and he departs on a journey of redemption. Naruto becomes the Seventh Hokage.
